Aleksandra Volkova: Emotional Gathering

Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us something about your artistic background?

My name is Aleksandra, but most people call me Sasha. I’m currently in my last semester at the University of the Arts Bremen, studying Integrated Design. My way of working has evolved over the last few years. For some time I have been working with typography and graphics, using the tools I have tried to highlight the problems of my city or the negative aspects of politics globally. Photography has always accompanied me in my life, but now it is my main occupation. Since then, my work has shifted towards exploring themes related to feelings and experiences.

What themes or questions do you generally deal with in your artistic work?

As I have already mentioned, I have been dealing with the emotional topics for a while. Dealing with this topic has been a fantastic journey of self-discovery, pushing me to understand my emotional level more and to question who I am. There are so many emotions and their triggers, and there are so many ways of expressing them. As I have little siblings, I’m super interested in their view of the world, how they see and perceive it. I think this has a lot to do with emotions, too.

How does your work relate to FOOTNOTES?

In social contexts like parties, what’s usually perceived from the outside are the obvious elements: laughter, conversation, music. But just like a footnote in a text, quieter, easily overlooked realities coexist, people who are physically present but feel mentally excluded or invisible.

My photo series becomes a visual footnote within the urban social space. It sheds light on the emotional landscape of city life. The party serves merely as one example: this sense of loneliness in crowded spaces can occur at any large social gathering.
