SOCIETY IS CALLING is a multidisciplinary artwork combining video, photography, and sound. It visualizes the tension between idealized concepts of integration and the lived experience of assimilation. Through a staged progression from adaptation to self-determination, the piece reflects on the challenges of preserving individual identity within societal norms.
The work SOCIETY IS CALLING explores the process of integration and its discrepancy with lived reality.
While integration is often associated with positive terms like diversity and equal opportunity, many people with a migration background instead experience assimilation – a process of adjustment, subordination, and alienation from one’s own identity. Constant adaptation leads to exhaustion and raises the question of whether there is space for individuality in a society that barely accepts true diversity. The piece visualizes the journey from integration through assimilation to self-determination within the boundaries set by society.
