Monetary Mirrors (Bremen)
Animation
2024 — 2025

In Monetary Mirrors, Shadi Jafarbadi explores money as a mirror of identity, with a particular focus on how the power of money is influenced by currency fluctuations. She uses video mapping as a powerful medium to explore the powerful history of the US dollar and to highlight its impact on identity and currency.

The composition of the work is structured using a modular grid system inspired by Swiss designer Karl Gerstner, known for his influential role in the development of the International Typographic Style. Gerstner’s grid, designed to be both systematic and adaptable, provides a flexible yet ordered foundation that shapes the visual language of the piece. It acts as an underlying framework that organizes visual elements, guiding the viewer’s eye and establishing a deliberate rhythm across the surface. This compositional structure enhances the narrative flow, ensuring that each element contributes to the overall cohesion of the work.

The result is a visually balanced and conceptually layered piece in which order becomes a tool for storytelling.
